Safety First! / by Derek Reynolds

The sunshine filled days at the beach, lake or pool are the best parts of Summer!  Laughing with family and friends, enjoying Summer BBQ’s!  And then it happens - you look down and see that tinge of green on your ends!  Or maybe you notice some dryness, fading or a brassy tone.  Unfortunately, sometimes the fun of Summer comes with these hair damaging side effects.

Here are some of our best tips and tricks to bring those strands back to life!

Prevention.  While not always realistic, it’s great to plan ahead for your exposure to chlorine or beachy ocean waves.

  1. Consider leaving some conditioner on your ends before heading into the water.  This tip helps protect your locks by creating a barrier over each strand, making it harder for chlorine or salt to be absorbed.

  2. Wet your hair with non-chlorinated water before entering the pool.  Wet hair tends to be less absorbent than dry hair and can help prevent chlorine water molecules from seeping into your strands.

  3. Be sure you are using a color protecting shampoo and conditioner.  This tip is not only important for Summer, but all year round!

We recommend Shu Uemura Color Lustre Sulfate Free Shampoo and Conditioner

This will help protect your hair from fading, so you get the longest wear out of your color!

Restore and Repair.  If you do find yourself with dryness, fizz or fading - no worries!  There are many ways to get back that Spring time shine!

  1. Start with a clarifying shampoo.  The first step for Summer repair is to get all the junk out!  Chlorine, sand, sea water - there can be residue in those locks, leaving you with the feeling of dry and brittle ends.  A clarifying shampoo will give your hair a great deep clean leaving you with a purified, chemical and chlorine free start!

  2. Cool down the brass.  If your blonde seems to be looking more golden, or you are seeing unwanted yellow tones, Shu Uemura Color Luster Reviving Balm in “Cool Blonde” can be used as a wonderful at home treatment! You may apply this after shampooing and conditioning, to towel dried hair.  Let the product soak in for 5 - 10 minutes and then just rinse out thoroughly.  Back to vibrant!

  3. Dryness and Frizz. Summer humidity can make you feel like your hair has grown to double its size!  This means for many it’s time to switch over your shampoo and styling products to something more moisturizing for Summer.  If you are using a volumizing shampoo, yet are having a hard time with frizz - swap out for something more hydrating, such as SHU Urban Moisture Hydrating shampoo or Redken's Frizz Dismiss line of products.

Treatment masks are another great way to add moisture back into hair!  Apply SHU Hydro Nourishing Treatment to damp hair, and let the hydrating properties settle in for 5 - 10 minutes.  Rinse and you will already be able to feel the difference in texture! From parched and dry to silky and smooth!

Come in for a visit!  If you have had fading, stop in for a quick glaze!  An easy process of adding some pigment back into your style.  Or if you feel as though you need a more intensive conditioning treatment, or a dusting of those split ends - let your stylist know!  We are always here to make you look and feel your very best!
